Defender winches sort into four setups, and the right one depends on whether your machine already has a place to bolt a winch.
| Setup | Material and specs | Best for | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-mounted Defender kit | SuperATV Ready-Fit: 4,500 lb (1.3 hp, 166:1) or 6,000 lb (1.9 hp, 266:1) Black Ops on a 3/16 in steel mount with 50 ft synthetic rope. Kolpin Quick-Mount: 4,500 lb, 39 ft synthetic rope, 4-way roller fairlead, built to work at -20°F | Owners who want the winch working the same afternoon, and plow buyers ahead of the first storm | The bracket fits only a Defender, and the kit costs more up front than a bare winch |
| Bare synthetic winch | Rough Country 4,500 lb: 1.4 hp series-wound motor, 166:1, 1/4 in by 50 ft rope, 4.87 by 3 in bolt pattern. SuperATV Black Ops 4,500 lb: 1.3 hp, 166:1, 50 ft rope, wireless remote, 3.0 by 6.6 in pattern | Defenders that already carry a winch plate or a winch-ready bumper | The mount is sold separately, and the plate has to match the winch's bolt pattern |
| Bare steel-cable winch | KFI 3,000 lb: cast aluminum and steel body, all-metal turn clutch, 13.39 in long. Warn VRX 35: 3,500 lb, 7/32 in by 50 ft steel rope, roller fairlead, IP68 sealing | Ranch and fence-line work where the line drags over wire, rock and stumps | Steel line weighs more, frays with age and needs a roller fairlead |
| Bed winch | SuperATV 500 lb winch with synthetic rope, 1/8 in carbon steel mounts, wiring routed under the dump bed, wired in-cab remote | Pulling hay bales, fence posts or a deer into a tilted bed | Built for loading rather than recovery, and a heavy load can drop the bed unexpectedly |
A plow winch lifts the blade at the end of every pass, often well below freezing, so cold and water matter more on a Defender than an extra 500 lb of rating. Kolpin builds its Quick-Mount to work at -20°F, with a sealed motor and gears made to run fully submerged. Warn rates the VRX 35 at IP68. SuperATV lists a waterproof solenoid on the Black Ops line, while Rough Country's 4,500 lb uses a water-resistant solenoid box, a step down for a machine that lives outside. For holding a load, Warn pairs a load-holding mechanical brake with a clutch design taken from its 4WD hub locks, and KFI runs an all-metal turn clutch. Gearing changes the job too: the 6,000 lb Ready-Fit turns 266:1 against 166:1 on the 4,500 lb units, trading line speed for pulling power.
The budget-friendly entry point is the Rough Country 4,500 lb at $197.95, with 50 feet of 1/4 inch synthetic rope and a hawse fairlead but no remote and no mount. The sweet spot runs from $367.45 to $488.97, and it's where most buyers land: SuperATV's bare 4,500 lb Black Ops with a wireless remote at $367.45, or the Ready-Fit at $441.93 to $488.97, which costs more but saves buying a plate. The premium tier starts with the Warn VRX 35 at $499.99 to $599.99 depending on line, and it includes Kolpin's Quick-Mount at $517.99, backed by a five-year mechanical and three-year electrical limited warranty. The bed winch at $574.23 to $678.06 is a separate purchase for a separate job.
If the winch is going to lift a blade, shop it alongside a Defender snow plow so the capacity and mount match the whole system. The most common warranty is between 3-6 months, but Everything Can-Am Offroad does offer extended 1- and 2-year warranties on all products if that is something you are interested in — you can add the extended warranty right at checkout. Every winch here is also covered by our risk-free 90-day return policy, and you can see what Defender owners say about us before you order.
Usually, yes, and it's the fitment question our team fields most on this page. KFI's lower mount covers HD5 through HD10 Defenders from 2016 on, but XT and Limited trims that keep the factory front bumper use KFI's upper relocation mount, which sits slightly off center. A wide-pattern winch bolts to it without drilling, while the narrow 3 by 4.88 inch pattern needs one hole drilled in the bumper. On 2026 HD11 machines with the factory bumper, KFI lists a separate upper mount. Tell us your trim and year first and we'll point you to the right plate in our Defender winch mounts and accessories.
Our own Can-Am winch buyer's guide points two-door Defenders toward 3,000 lb kits and the heavier MAX toward 4,500 to 5,000 lb. Size up if the winch will also pull other machines out or work hard outside plow season, and SuperATV offers the Ready-Fit in 6,000 lb with 266:1 gearing for that kind of work. Wiring matters on the longer MAX as well. SuperATV cuts the Ready-Fit's heavy-gauge wiring long enough for four-seat machines.
Yes. SuperATV builds a bed winch specifically for the Defender's dump bed. It mounts to the front of the bed, runs a 500 lb winch off a wired in-cab remote and routes its wiring under the bed so it stays clear when you tilt it. Tilt the bed, hook the load and winch it in. SuperATV warns that the bed can drop unexpectedly depending on the load's weight, so keep hands and feet clear. For rear recovery pulls rather than loading, look at the rear winch-ready options in our Defender bumpers and brush guards.
Most owners can, because aftermarket winches are designed knowing the owner installs them. Kolpin rates its Quick-Mount at about 15 minutes on the machine. The Ready-Fit bolts on and connects to the harness and power terminals under the hood. Many of our listings carry downloadable install guides, with more added all the time. If you'd rather talk it through, our customer service team averages 5+ years with us and handles pre-sale fitment and post-sale support.
