| Winch | Motor, line and build | Best for | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rough Country 4,500 lb synthetic | 1.4 hp series-wound motor, 166:1 differential planetary gearing, 1/4 in by 50 ft synthetic rope, hawse fairlead, 4.87 by 3 in bolt pattern | A first winch for a Sport or Trail that mostly needs to get itself unstuck | On/off switch only with no wireless remote, and a water-resistant rather than waterproof solenoid |
| SuperATV Black Ops 4,500 lb | 1.3 hp permanent-magnet motor, 166:1 gearing, 50 ft synthetic rope, waterproof solenoid, 6.0 in aluminum hawse, 3.0 by 6.6 in bolt pattern | X3 and X3 MAX owners who winch alone and want the remote in hand | Needs a mount made for the wider 3.0 by 6.6 in pattern |
| SuperATV Black Ops 6,000 lb | 1.9 hp motor, 266:1 gearing, 50 ft synthetic rope, 12 ft wiring, 14.56 in long | A loaded X3 MAX or a machine that pulls other riders out | The longest body of the five, and the price climbs to $634.94 with the Auto-Stop fairlead kit |
| Warn VRX 35 | 3,500 lb, 7/32 in by 50 ft steel rope or synthetic at checkout, roller fairlead, IP68 sealing, all-metal three-stage planetary gear train | Trail and Sport riders who cross water and store the machine outside | The lowest rated pull on this page, shared with the Axon |
| Warn Axon 35 | 3,500 lb, digital control with load and temperature readout, one-piece tie plate, IP68 sealing, steel or synthetic at checkout | Owners who want feedback during a pull and the longest warranty listed on this page | The top of the price range at $674.99 to $779.99 |
Start with the brake, since it holds the load whenever you stop to reset a line. Warn lists a load-holding mechanical brake on the VRX, Rough Country a mechanical brake on its 4,500 lb and SuperATV an automatic braking system on the Black Ops. Sealing comes in three grades here: IP68 on the two Warn units, a waterproof solenoid on the SuperATV kits and a water-resistant solenoid and receiver box on the Rough Country. The Axon adds a one-piece tie plate in place of tie bars for a stiffer structure, and it is the only one of the five whose digital control reports load and temperature while you pull. The Warn pair also runs stainless-steel fasteners under a powder-coated finish.
The mount advice from our own Can-Am winch buyer's guide still holds. A winch is only as strong as what it bolts to, so pick a plate or bumper rated at or above the winch's line pull. Be careful pulling through a bumper whose support points are not rated for the full load, and more careful still with a snatch block in the line, since it raises the force on the mount.
The budget-friendly entry is the Rough Country 4,500 lb at $197.95. That buys 50 feet of 1/4-inch synthetic, a 1.4 hp motor and a hawse fairlead, with an on/off switch in place of a remote. The sweet spot runs from $367.45 for the SuperATV 4,500 lb to $416.45 for the 6,000 lb, and it is where most Maverick owners land: wireless remote, waterproof solenoid, 12-foot wiring for MAX models and a 1-year SuperATV warranty against manufacturing defects. Premium starts with the Warn VRX 35 at $499.99 to $599.99 and tops out with the Axon 35 at $674.99 to $779.99, where the money buys IP68 sealing, digital control and a limited lifetime mechanical warranty with three years on the electrical side. Leave room in the budget for the mount, which is a separate part on every winch here. The most common warranty is between 3-6 months, but Everything Can-Am Offroad does offer extended 1- and 2-year warranties on all products if that is something you are interested in — you can add the extended warranty right at checkout. Our price match guarantee covers every winch on this page, and most items ship within 24 hours, with any exceptions showing a lead time right on the product page. The winch usually will. The mount will not. SuperATV lists its 6,000 lb Black Ops as universal fit, and the SuperATV and Rough Country 4,500 lb listings name the Commander, Maverick and Defender together. What changes between an X3, a Sport and a Trail is the plate or bumper the winch bolts to, so order the mount for your exact model and year. Send us your year and trim and we'll confirm the winch and the mount together.
A winch-ready bumper puts the winch higher and easier to reach, and it adds front-end protection in the same purchase. A bare plate is the lighter, simpler route. Whichever you choose, match its rating to the winch. A bumper's support points may not be rated for the full force a winch can generate, and a snatch block adds to that load. If you run the 6,000 lb SuperATV, confirm the bumper listing names that capacity before you order.
The two SuperATV Black Ops kits each include a wireless remote with a water-resistant receiver and a 50-foot range, plus a wired dash rocker switch, so you can stand clear of the line or work it from the seat. The Rough Country ships with an on/off switch. The Warn VRX uses a handlebar-mounted rocker switch, and the Axon uses a digital rocker-bar control with a handlebar mount adaptor. If you ride alone often, the remote is the feature to pay for.
Synthetic rope picks up grit and mud, and it needs to dry out off the spool to keep its strength. After a wet or sandy ride, pull the rope off the drum and let it dry before you spool it back on. If you ride through water and mud, put dielectric grease on the solenoid wherever it ends up mounted.
